QUOTE Lawmakers vote to launch Mexican "NASA" Thu Apr 27, 5:59 PM ET MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - They may be light years away from fulfilling their dream, but Mexican lawmakers are preparing to launch a national space agency they hope could one day stand tall beside the United States' NASA. ADVERTISEMENT Mexico's lower house passed a law on Wednesday, which if approved by the upper chamber, would create a space agency to coordinate research and work with universities and the private sector to launch communication and weather satellites. With an initial budget proposal of less than $2 million, the backers of the Mexican Space Agency say it would struggle to challenge its northern neighbor's National Aeronautics and Space Administration, or NASA, but hope it would draw Mexico into the international space community, bringing access to cutting-edge technology and research. "We'd love it to become the Mexican NASA, but obviously the levels of investment are incomparable. It's very distant, perhaps not in the vision but in resources," a spokesman for the Mexican Congress's Science and Technology Commission, which drew up the law, said on Thursday. The spokesman said the agency would help Mexico advance in diverse fields of science and technology, including robotics, electronics and telecommunications. The commission hopes the law will be swiftly passed in the Senate, allowing the agency to start operating next year. However, not all politicians support the plan. The ruling National Action Party, which has a minority in Congress, voted against the initiative, saying the money would be better spent on eradicating widespread poverty. I can understand the "Better usage of money" argument, I think it would be better to form some sort of agreement with America and the EU for cooperation with our space services, as opposed to reinventing the wheel at a high price in Mexico. |

They desparately need to deal with corruption first-- Mexico is more corrupt than Iraq under Saddam Hussein.

Maybe they should make it so citizens dont flee the country on a daily basis before working on a space program.

Got to be w/Telum on that.
"ummm... we have no jobs, our citizens barely eat, those with any brains and mobility are fleeing north since the US has a border as sealed as a fifty year old condom, the mafia runs half our country through one of the few exports - which, oh yeah, happens to be illegal drugs - and you want us to scrap together our few remaining pesos to put a monkey in space?" Egads. Btw, did anyone else get a chuckle out of the thread title? "Mexican space program" just sounds like it's own joke. |

Headline from the year 2022:
In space news today, the Mexican space station Amigo 1 suffered a breakdown of it's air recycling system due to overcrowding on the station. The Institute for Spacial Technical Exploration and Mexican Excursions (ISTExMEx) had previously been warned by NASA about overcrowding it's shuttle craft. The crew of the Amigo 1 did manage to board its emergency escape craft in time to save themselves, and are now residing in the International Space Station. The International Space Station is now in a crisis with its life support system straining to keep its normal crew and the crew of the Mexican space station alive. The governments involved in the maintenance of the International Space Station have said that they are not able pay for the exhorbitatant cost of transporting the refugee astronauts back to Earth, while the Mexican government seems content to let it's astonauts stay where they are, citing that they had asked 10 years ago to be involved in the growth of the International Space Station and that this is the perfect time to allow them to help expand the station to fill its new needs. Thats right, it's illegal aliens IIIIIIIIIIIIIN SPAAAAAAAAAAAACE. |
