gnuneo, do you believe that Janus actually had two faces and that he was able to look forward and backward at the same time?

yes, the mythical janus actually has two faces, one looking forward and one back. Does your encyclopedia of mythology say different?

'The Sibyl, with frenzied mouth uttering things not to be laughed at, unadorned and unperfumed, yet reaches to a thousand years with her voice by aid of the god.' (Heraclitus, fragment 12)

1. Why a frenzied mouth?

2. Why can we not laugh?

                                [37]
                                  14

          {Kappa-Epsilon-Phi-Alpha-Lambda-Eta Iota-Delta}

                            ONION-PEELINGS

The Universe is the Practical Joke of the General
at the Expense of the Particular, quoth FRATER
      PERDURABO, and laughed.
But those disciples nearest to him wept, seeing the
      Universal Sorrow.
Those next to them laughed, seeing the Universal
      Joke.
    Below these certain disciples wept.
    Then certain laughed.
    Others next wept.
    Others next laughed.
    Next others wept.
    Next others laughed.
Last came those that wept because they could not
see the Joke, and those that laughed lest they
should be thought not to see the Joke, and thought
it safe to act like FRATER PERDURABO.
    But though FRATER PERDURABO laughed
      openly, He also at the same time wept secretly;
and in Himself He neither laughed nor wept.
Nor did He mean what He said.

                                [38]
                      COMMENTARY ({Iota-Delta})

The title, "Onion-Peelings", refers to the well-known
    incident in "Peer Gynt".
The chapter resembles strongly Dupin's account of
how he was able to win at the game of guessing odd or
even.  (See Poe's tale of "The Purloined Letter".)
But this is a more serious piece of psychology.  In one's
advance towards a comprehension of the universe, one
changes radically one's point of view; nearly always it
    amounts to a reversal.
this is the cause of most religious controversies.
Paragraph 1, however, is Frater Perdurabo's formula-
tion of his perception of the Universal Joke, also
described in Chapter 34.  All individual existence is
tragic.  Perception of this fact is the essence of comedy.
"Household Gods" is an attempt to write pure comedy.
"The Bacchae" of Euripides is another.
At the end of the chapter it is, however, seen that to
the Master of the Temple the opposite perception occurs
simultaneously, and that he himself is beyond both of
    these.
And in the last paragraph it is shown that he realises
the truth as beyond any statement of it.

i'm not a crowleyite, not at all, but the man went a LONG way. I downloaded some recordings of his voice, specifically to hear him read my favourite poem *ever*, 'My Gitana', but as i discovered even just hearing his voice creates new mysteries and potential myths.

anyone who has heard it will know what i mean. ;)

of course, it IS just coincidence. "we will fight them on the beaches...." - extraordinary coincidence though.

life's funny huh? ;)

"frenzied" might be as lib models, ie the information flow is of rapid pace - also it might be that certain understandings need to be hidden until the correct time. Indeed it might be many reasons, and quite possibly all, depending on many circumstances, the person, their socialised beliefs of behaviour (ie the sybil might have had to conform to the current social beliefs about how sybils have to act), or by having a frenzy (trance?) it makes it easier to bamboozle when theyre not sure (bad things quite often happen to seers etc who are uncertain in times of crisis - especially if the Leader/megalomaniacs are used to hearing good news coming from them.), it might even be the real effect when they experience an invoked God and are effectively possessed. It might even be a reference to the likelyhood that epileptics/hysterics are often drawn into religion, and to their behaviour at heightened states of social/individual 'pressure'.

as i said, probably different for different sybils, different places, different times, and indeed quite possibly not universally true.

What is the column density of molecules in the atmosphere? You may assume constant temperature, and whatever atmospheric model is convenient.

What is your opinion on the relationship of drugs with religion? Do you feel like hallucinogenic drugs (e.g. LSD, mescaline, DMT, ketamine) are a useful tool for religious/spiritual exploration/revelation?

exactly like religion, all altered states of consciousness are useful for comparison to gain a grasp upon the different dimensions of reality - ergo, our own internal models of 'reality' affect our understandings of our direct perceptions, therefore altered states can grant wider knowledge, even possibly wisdom. Meditation, in and of itself, invlolves different neurochemicals within the brain from 'normal' neurochemicals. In short, yes.
