So I had to drop by my mom's work today, and I happened to stumble upon the sweetest thing that money could buy. A four dimensional screen area, privately funded of course (because the government is too queer for this shit). What you do is you put on a pair of 3-d glasses, and you go into what I'll describe as a tank, which is a room about 10 feet by 10 feet, and has a screen on all 4 sides, including the roof and floor. They had a couple programs for the anatomy of the human, and a virtual tour of being inside a heart. You control this shit by a remote control; it was pretty well a nerd's wet dream. I should persuade them to program games onto that mother fucker... damn...

It sounds cool, but I don't understand how it was 4Dl - it sounds 3D to me?

Let me explain:
2-d: Up and down, sideways 3-d: Up and down, sideways, depth 4-d: No restriction on 3-d objects. Example: Pretend you were to take a picture of your computer. You cannot put 100% of all the surface area of your computer into the picture. Therefore, the picture is 3-d. Pretend you are too program a virtual image of a computer into this device. Since you could see 100% of the object, by moving around it, it'd be a 4-d projector. This post has been edited by Demosthenes: Jul 23 2005, 08:14 AM |

That sounds pretty fucking trippy. I suppose there's no chance I can presuade you to drop a couple of tabs, go into this thing and then come back and let us know how it went?

Demosthenes: A better word would probably be virtual.
The 4th dimension is time, and I don't see that as qualifying as incorporating time. Although......... eh its pretty fuzzy. |

Time is not a dimension, Nalvaros, otherwise E=mc^2 is wrong!
When travelling at the speed of light, 1 meter there is 1 meter at my place. Time is done otherwise, if i am not critically mistaken. |

I have (had? it's kind of far away now) access to one of these things. Played doom on it. I remember predictions that all home entertainment systems (or gaming systems anyway) would evolve to something like this about now. So much for that.

If it is created today, only the 3 richest kings in europe could buy it lol
Videogame technology is the fastest growing industry sector in modern times. Who'd predict Halo 2 or Half-Life 2 10 years ago? |

How long do you reckon it would take for it to become a home video console?
Man, I'd never leave. One day I hope you could take vacations in it. Sorry creaming my pants now. |

the requirment for a 10x10 room could be a limit on the likleyhood of it becoming a widespread video game system.

actually theyre already developing 'virtual wallpaper', wallpaper that can change state - nor is it expected to be very expensive when finally achieved.
those 3d specs might be coming in useful sooner than you think ;) isnt time/space the 4th dimension? one cannot discuss time without space, nor space without time. (there cannot be time without space to judge it by, nor space without time to exist in) |
