Erm, wern't they seperate states to begin with? DRC was a belgian colony and Congo Brazzaville was French. Both attained indipendance, as seperate states, at about the same time. Actually with the same name, the DRC latter added the D in 1966.

Why did the Democratic Republic of the Congo separate from the Republic of Congo?

I'm guessing it had something to do with one being a Belgian colony and the other being French, but honestly I forgot.

Heh... I swore I read an article on it a while back; seems that I was mistaken. Something to do with the mineral wealth of one province... regardless, here's a new one.

What are the two names of Sir Francis Drake's flagship in his 1577-1580 circumnavigation? (It was renamed mid-voyage)

There was an attempt by a province of the DRC(Kinsasha iirc) to break away. It wasn't succesful. And that was the cause.

Just before he rounded S. America and entered the Pacific he renamed his flagship the Golden Hind.

Don't recall what it was orginally named. At least not right now...

New question.

Who was the first country to recognise the US, and what was their reason?

Ugh. This is that really weird one that no one ever remembers because it doesn't make sense unless you remember the entire story. The Dutch?
